Blackheath tunnel books a substantial wellness retreat
Blackheath tunnel will close for ten weeks of repairs. At 175, it has decided that carrying thousands of commuters no longer respects its boundaries.
Network Rail will spend £10 million on essential work from 18 May to 27 July. Meanwhile, trains will divert via Greenwich or Bexleyheath. Passengers will learn every stop on the route they never wanted.
The tunnel already enjoyed a ten-week closure in 2024. During that break, teams cleaned soot and replaced thousands of bricks. However, it then discovered the rule of home renovation: one good wall makes every other wall look needy.
“This is phase two of the tunnel’s personal journey,” said Neville Ballast, Deputy Curator of Unexpected Platforms. “At 175, it deserves to explore who it is beneath the soot.”
Selected TfL buses will accept rail tickets at no extra cost. Still, Network Rail will provide no replacement buses. Bad transport news must always arrive with a small puzzle.
Therefore, the Institute of Passenger Resilience advises commuters to plan ahead. They should also develop the flexibility of someone whose direct train became three vehicles and a brisk walk.
Finally, the tunnel should return refreshed and repaired. It will refuse to discuss what £10 million bought per brick. Passengers will return with new calves and a haunted knowledge of the diversion.
