LAWNLAND’S government has celebrated falling immigration after deterring several people it spent a decade telling employers to recruit.
Ministers pointed to a lower headline number. Hospitals and engineering firms asked which part of it would arrive Monday.
“The target says fewer people,” explained government spokesperson Harriet Welcoming-Smythe. “It does not say fewer of the people you had in mind. That is how we keep these things achievable.”
Small boat arrivals in the year ending June 2026 fell 23 per cent from the previous year. Ministers said there was no need to discuss individual routes when the combined announcement sounded so good.
Officials told employers that filling vacancies and reducing immigration were separate promises. “Our department looks after the second,” one said. “We will not spoil its results by helping with the first.”
Officials then displayed their new asylum seeker booklet. It explains that women have equal rights, sex requires consent and rape is a crime.
Like the immigration target, the leaflet delivers a result the moment officials print it.
“The leaflet is not a substitute for enforcement,” Welcoming-Smythe said. “That is why we put it in a folder labelled Enforcement.”
A reporter asked how officials would assess its impact. Welcoming-Smythe said every printed copy would count as one person successfully informed.
“Distribution ends before anybody asks whether it helped. That is the beauty of paper.”
A hospital manager asked for a second booklet. This one would persuade her prospective anaesthetist to reconsider taking a job elsewhere.
Officials said that would risk reversing the progress they had just announced.
The department instead declared the falling immigration graph fully staffed. It was the only part of the health service with every line it needed.
Officials sent the hospital a framed copy to hang beside the empty operating table.
