A New Year message has promised that renewal can become real, giving a fictional progress folder the chance to unfold a map, consult a blank chart and ask whether hope has submitted its delivery timetable.
The Prime Minister’s message looked ahead to 2026 and referred to bills, communities, the health service and the pace of change. Those are matters that affect real lives. The joke here is aimed at the official language that can make a roadmap feel as though it needs a roadmap.
New Year message meets the progress folder
The message said that renewal would not happen overnight. That is a fair warning. At the fictional Office of Forward Motion, three administrators took this to mean that the calendar should be given a lanyard and asked to chair a meeting about the future.
Promises about public services need to be judged by real results. The fictional progress chart agrees. It has drawn a very confident upward line and then requested permission to define what the line represents.
Government messages often gather a great many hopes into one paragraph. The folder is impressed. It has attempted the same with a map, a calendar and a cup of tea, then discovered that none of them could approve a plan without a follow up workshop.
The map requests a milestone
Public promises deserve scrutiny, clarity and time. They do not need a model office machine congratulating itself for spelling progress correctly. The imaginary folder has nevertheless prepared a certificate for the chart.
By the end of the pretend session, the calendar had received an action owner and the map had been asked to provide evidence of direction. The chart was delighted. It had finally found a public role that required no numbers.
The real test will be whether change is felt beyond the paperwork. The fictional folder has taken that on board and immediately scheduled a meeting to consider the word beyond.
