The schedule offers an orderly campaign from August to May. However, live television coverage can move matches later. A Sunday afternoon may become Monday night because somebody on another continent enjoys suspense and does not own a railcard.
“I have booked six hotels with free cancellation,” said Neville Awayday Folder of the Institute for Holding Receipts. “Our actual holiday has less contingency planning than Bournemouth away.”
Clubs welcomed the clarity. Their social teams turned every fixture into dramatic artwork, with smoke, floodlights and two players staring as if the date had insulted their families.

Meanwhile, supporters compared run ins and predicted the final table. Every new signing looked transformative. Every manager had a plan. September had not yet entered the room wearing a fluorescent training bib.
By lunchtime, one game already looked inconvenient. Television promised to announce the new inconvenience once enough people had booked trains that could not be refunded.
Football supporters accepted this as tradition. They have evolved beyond anger and now experience the fixture change as a familiar weather event, involving disappointment and a very expensive sandwich.
