A thousand military homes have been upgraded in time for Christmas, giving the inspection folder a reason to admire a model house and declare that a paint roller now requires a strategy meeting.
The Ministry of Defence said work to improve 1,000 of the worst service family homes had finished ahead of schedule. The programme is called Raising the Minimum Standards. That is welcome practical work. The fictional folder has heard the name and immediately asked whether minimum standards can be promoted to a festive committee.
Military homes upgrades meet the paint roller
The announcement says almost 700 properties in England, more than 150 in Northern Ireland, over 100 in Wales and more than 50 in Scotland received upgrades. A further 250 homes will receive priority work over the coming months. Every genuine repair matters more than the invented meeting about where a measuring tape should sit on the agenda.
At the fictional Office of Domestic Progress, three coordinators placed a model house beside a paint roller. The house looked ready for the inspection. The paint roller looked ready to be appointed deputy chair of surfaces.
The Defence Housing Strategy aims at a wider renewal of service family homes. Real families need clean and functional places to live. The comic target here is the temptation to make each improvement sound like a minor constitutional event for a clipboard.
The model house requests a site visit
The folder proposed a careful sequence. First, check the roof. Second, check the heating. Third, ask the model house whether it has considered becoming a pilot scheme. The model house declined, citing a prior engagement with the tiny front door.
There is no joke in poor housing. There is one in the moment a measuring tape acquires a stakeholder map. The upgrades are tangible work, while the fictional paperwork remains thrilled to discover that a wall can be both repaired and minuted.
By the end of the meeting, the paint roller had been given a lanyard and the model house had received a provisional action plan. It may now celebrate Christmas with a sound roof, a fresh coat of paint and absolutely no further request for a vision statement.
