The new United Kingdom National Statistician has arrived to lead the country’s statistical system. André Loranger took the role on 8 September 2026 after serving as Canada’s Chief Statistician. The numbers now have someone senior enough to ask why they are still waiting in a corridor. The blank chart sheet has requested a chair, a source note and a proper induction before anyone calculates its workload.
The new United Kingdom National Statistician meets the paperwork
Loranger will lead the Government Statistical Service. He will also advise ministers and the UK Statistics Authority on statistical matters. That is a substantial brief. Somewhere in the official paperwork, a percentage is wondering whether it has been promoted beyond its competence.
The Canadian Government gave Loranger nearly three decades of public sector experience. He replaces Emma Rourke, who stepped down in December 2025 after serving on an interim basis. The First Civil Service Commissioner and the UK Statistics Authority oversaw the recruitment process.
That sounds reassuringly serious. Official statistics should help governments and the public understand events. The National Statistician advises on the quality, good practice and comprehensiveness of official statistics. It sounds like a job title created by a committee that refused to leave the room. The new United Kingdom National Statistician also arrives while officials consider the separation between the National Statistician and Permanent Secretary roles. The system can welcome its new head and explain the governance arrangements. It can then begin the ancient British ritual of finding the cupboard with the latest spreadsheet.
The blank chart sheet has accepted the appointment with dignity. It is waiting for a title and the authority to reject a pie chart that has been emotionally edited. Britain has appointed a senior guardian for the numbers, while the numbers remain in witness protection from the people who keep changing the labels.
