Five-leader call reaches the speaking-again stage
A five-leader call discussed Ukraine, the cost of war and the need for an unconditional ceasefire. It then achieved the rare diplomatic breakthrough of ending without anybody forgetting to unmute.
The UK Prime Minister spoke with the leaders of the United States, France, Germany and Italy. Together, they considered peace talks and possible sanctions. They also looked forward to speaking again soon.
That final phrase performs vital work in official summaries. It confirms that the telephone functioned. Moreover, it leaves enough narrative tension for the sequel.
“All participants demonstrated advanced listening-shaped behaviour,” said Sir Barnaby Dialtone, Keeper of International Hold Music. “At one point, nobody said you’re on mute for nearly seven minutes.”
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Serious Calls prepared five identical glasses of water. Staff also produced a seating plan for a conversation in which nobody sat in the same country.
The leaders agreed that peace talks must receive serious engagement. That objective matters far beyond the language of the communique. For people living through war, diplomatic progress cannot remain a calendar invitation.
Finally, officials filed the summary beneath “constructive” and charged every secure handset. The next call can now begin with the traditional ceremony of asking whether everybody can hear everybody else.
