Euro 2028 funding sits within a wider £900 million sports investment package. Britain is preparing for a major football tournament with the confidence of a nation that has ordered the lanyards and is now looking for the stadium plan.

Euro 2028 finds a very large promise

The government announced more than £500 million for major sporting events, including Euro 2028, alongside at least £400 million for new and improved grassroots facilities. The tournament remains years away, which gives everyone plenty of time to agree what a legacy means before putting it on a banner.

Major events can bring visitors, jobs and excitement. They can also generate a remarkable amount of clipboards. Host cities need plans. Those plans need steering groups. Soon a steering group discovers that the nearest meeting room is booked for a workshop called Delivering Together.

Euro 2028 funding supports an event expected to create economic value across the UK. That remains an ambition. The early evidence is that somebody can turn a football match into a three year discussion about the correct font for a volunteer badge.

Euro 2028 warms up the paperwork

The grassroots funding matters beyond the tournament. Better pitches and facilities can give more people a place to play. That is the useful part. The comic part begins when an immaculate new changing room receives a five page strategy for the emotional journey of its mop bucket.

Football needs players, coaches, volunteers and grounds that do not become ponds after twelve minutes of weather. A funding commitment can help. It cannot stop a planning call from asking whether the goalposts completed an equality impact assessment.

For now, Euro 2028 has a future, a funding commitment and a very long run up. By kick off, Britain may have built lasting facilities. It may also have perfected a lanyard capable of holding a pass, a timetable and the entire national optimism.
