The Student Loans Company has reminded new full time undergraduates in England to apply for student finance by 15 May, giving the nation’s future graduates four weeks to persuade a government system that they are definitely planning to exist. The calendar has responded by opening a revision timetable and revising the meaning of soon.
The reminder, issued on 8 May 2026, applies to students hoping to start university or college in England this autumn. Applications can take up to four weeks to process, so students are encouraged to apply even when their course, university or living arrangements are not yet settled.
This is a practical arrangement, although it requires applicants to make a financial decision about a future that has not finished making its own decisions. The student must provide certainty to the system while the system kindly permits uncertainty to remain everywhere else.
A fictional admissions administrator, Brenda Ledger, has welcomed applications from people still choosing between three universities, two courses and one parent’s increasingly forceful opinion. Her desk contains seven forms marked final, all of which are waiting for somebody to change something.
Applicants need information including their National Insurance number, passport details and bank details. Where household income matters, a parent’s email address is also required. The online account can track progress, answer common questions and identify outstanding actions, which is encouraging for anyone who has ever believed a government form was finished because it stopped making noises.
New students will apply for a Plan 5 loan. Tuition Fee Loans of up to £9,790 may be available to cover fees, subject to eligibility, while maintenance support is intended to help with living costs. Returning students have until 21 June 2026 to apply, giving them extra time to locate their password, their evidence and the part of their soul that still trusts online accounts.
The sensible message is simple. Apply early, check the details and update the application when the future becomes less hypothetical. The calendar has highlighted 15 May in red, circled it twice and appointed itself temporary head of student services. It is now demanding a personal statement from June.
