National Park board appointments have been made for the Lake District and South Downs, giving the appointment folder a chance to step outside, admire the view and explain that governance also appreciates a well placed bench.
Defra announced two new National Park Authority board members on 19 December 2025. Juliet Bailey joined the Lake District National Park Authority, while Robson Peisley joined the South Downs National Park Authority. Each appointment lasts four years and ends on 30 June 2029. That is important stewardship work. It is also long enough for a folder to develop firm opinions about scenic access.
At the fictional Office of Responsible Outlooks, staff carried a blank appointment folder to a hilltop and asked it to consider the statutory purpose of the landscape. It considered the horizon, requested the minutes and suggested a working group for cloud movement.
National Park board appointments meet the folder
National Park Authority boards help protect natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage. They also support opportunities for the public to understand and enjoy these places. The practical responsibilities are substantial. Meanwhile, the folder has learnt only that it may now describe a gate as a stakeholder.
Board members serve a public role and must look after places valued by visitors and communities. In response, one imaginary clipboard proposed a strategy for improving the relationship between a footpath and an unexpectedly determined puddle.
A four year term visits the viewpoint
The appointments followed the Governance Code on Public Appointments. The process focuses on merit and does not depend on political activity. The fictional folder supports the principle, although it remains convinced that a good landscape deserves one non political lanyard.
National Parks balance conservation, access and the realities of running a public authority. Those tasks rarely fit into a postcard. However, they fit neatly into a board paper, where a sweeping valley can become an agenda item with an action owner.
For now, the new members have begun their terms. The appointment folder stands ready to help. It has packed a rainproof cover, a blank notebook and a carefully worded proposal that the view remain preserved until the next meeting.
That proposal has already reached the final stage of consultation. The view will now be invited to comment on whether it wishes to continue being visible. If approved, the folder will receive a landscape allowance and the horizon will be promoted to director of outlook.
