Military Intelligence Services are being brought together under one Defence organisation, giving the coordination folder a new sense of purpose and a firm belief that it can now anticipate the future if somebody shares the calendar invite.
The Ministry of Defence announced the new Military Intelligence Services on 12 December 2025. The change brings intelligence units and organisations from across Defence into one structure. It also includes a Defence Intelligence Academy for training in cyber, space and geospatial analysis. The aim is to gather, analyse and share information more effectively. That is serious work. It is also an ambitious day for a folder that has recently discovered the phrase joined up.
At the fictional Office of Careful Coordination, three blank folders were asked to combine their expertise. They formed a steering group, chose a chair and spent the morning deciding which drawer could hold the strategic overview.
Military Intelligence Services meet the coordination folder
The new organisation is intended to improve the way Defence brings information together. Units from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force will work within the single structure. The practical task is demanding. The paperwork has understood only that it is now part of a multi domain approach.
A Defence Intelligence Academy will support training in specialist disciplines. Skills matter when technology and threats change quickly. The fictional training folder has asked whether its own module can cover lanyard resilience and the proper handling of a meeting that should have been an email.
A shared desk receives an operational purpose
Coordination can make a difference when the people who need information can use it quickly. The announcement describes a new structure for that work. One imaginary office map has responded by requesting a clearer route between the printer and the secure cupboard.
The new approach concerns organisation, training and the ability to share insight across Defence. It does not make complex work simple. Still, it gives every administrative chart the rare opportunity to claim it is helping protect a national capability.
For now, Military Intelligence Services are taking shape. The coordination folder is ready. It has closed the laptop, filed the whiteboard under immediate action and asked whether the word confidential can be made available in a slightly larger font.
