Plant Productivity Gets An Extremely Remote Manager

NASA’s PACE satellite is helping researchers map plant productivity from orbit, giving every crop an extremely remote performance review.

Plant productivity has been assessed from orbit, giving every field the same managerial experience as a badly run office: someone far away has discovered a graph and would like to discuss its energy levels.

A study published on 10 July 2025 used data from the Ocean Color Instrument aboard NASA’s PACE satellite to develop algorithms for estimating gross primary productivity on land. The instrument was built to study the ocean and atmosphere, but its 49 spectral bands also noticed that vegetation was reflecting light in a way that could be converted into a performance review.

The researchers compared eight day averages from 47 flux towers across the United States with OCI observations collected during the growing season from March through September 2024. The sites represented different vegetation and climate conditions, which is precisely the sort of diversity a corporate mission statement celebrates before measuring everyone against the same fern.

Laurel, Orbital Director of Leaves, welcomed the findings while standing beside a plant that had been waiting several billion years for its first appraisal. “The early indicators are encouraging,” she said. “We can now identify a photosynthetic dip before the plant has prepared a sufficiently positive explanation.”

The algorithms worked out how different wavelengths related to the amount of carbon dioxide plants were taking in. A red edge chlorophyll index explained much of the variation, while using the full spectral information improved the estimates further. Agriculture, forests and other ecosystems may eventually benefit from a clearer view of how productivity changes across large areas.

This is not an orbital helpline for distressed crops. It is research showing that PACE OCI data can map productivity dynamics at continental scales, with results varying according to vegetation, climate and the local relationship between a plant and the atmosphere. The satellite has not yet sent a formal warning to a wheat field, although several farms are checking their spam folders.

Managers may use information like this to spot changes associated with heat, drought or other stresses earlier. The Office of Vegetative Output has already advised landowners to respond constructively, remain agile and avoid asking why the weather has been allowed to affect the targets.

One sunflower has lodged an appeal against its score, arguing that it spent the entire season following the light and should therefore be considered highly aligned. Its appeal was rejected after the satellite found insufficient evidence of personal development.

The plant remains under observation, but at least its line manager is now in orbit and cannot organise a team building day. It has therefore achieved what most employees want from management: constant scrutiny with no chance of being invited to lunch.
